Transform your tubular chest into a round, natural breast.
In the image shown, we see a woman, at a frontal angle, who has typical features of tuberous breast, a condition in which breast tissue does not develop evenly during puberty, resulting in a more conical and irregular breast shape. This is a medical case that can be corrected with augmentation or modelling mastoplasty procedures, providing a more harmonious and symmetrical breast contour.

What is Tuberous Breast?

The tuberous breast is a altered breast developmentThis leads to a tube-shaped breast instead of a round-shaped one. There are milder cases and more severe cases.

The tubular shape of the tuberous breast results from the existence of a fibrous ring, which prevents the breast from developing or growing in the normal wayThe breasts have a rounded shape. This ring forces the breast tissue to develop through this ring and the breast ends up in the shape of a tube, which also causes the areola to be too large.

O treatment of tuberous breasts is surgical. There are no other forms of treatment other than surgery.

For an assessment, contact us to book an appointment at Coimbra (Centre for Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery) or Lisbon (MYFACE clinic).

What are the characteristics of the tuberous breast?

The tuberous breast is a breast disease which manifests itself in many different ways:

  • In milder forms of the diseaseIn the case of tuberous breast disease, the woman may not even realise it and just think she has a smaller breast than expected for her age or in comparison with the characteristics of her closest relatives (mother or sisters). The mildest form of tuberous breast is characterised by a change in the lower and inner part of the breast (it looks like a little tissue is missing), but otherwise the breast looks normal.
  • In the most serious form of the disease the breast appears to be shaped like a tube: it's very small, has a tubular shape and the areola is very large.
  • There are also various intermediate forms of the disease.

Benefits of tuberous breast treatment

Expectations

The breast is a very important part of the body for women. Therefore, anything that alters it has a significant impact on confidence, self-esteem and also on psychosocial development.

The tubular breast usually manifests itself (and is diagnosed) during puberty and early adulthood, when the breast begins to grow. As such, this deformity tends to generate anxiety in young women, depression and peer rejection, which is why early treatment is recommended.

Surgery to treat tuberous breasts is a surgical procedure that aims to improve your image and boost your self-esteem. However, the new image alone will not change all other areas of life (family, social or professional), so it is essential to realise this.

Emotional balance is therefore essential when undergoing surgery, especially if it is cosmetic in nature.

How the procedure to treat tuberous breasts is carried out.

How is Tuberous Breast Correction performed?

Depending on the different degrees of severity of the disease, there are various forms of surgical treatment for tuberous breasts. The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic in an operating theatre and patients spend a night in the clinic recovering from the surgery before returning home.

There are various surgical techniques for treating tuberous breasts, which can be performed individually or simultaneously, depending on the specificity of each case:

a) treating the mammary gland (specifically, the fibrous constrictor ring, which is the cause of the disease).

b) reduction in areola size (remove skin from the areola and breast);

c) increase breast volume (when it is underdeveloped, it may require breast implants);

Scars

Like all surgeries, tuberous breast surgery cannot be performed without scars.

In milder casesthe scar may only remain in the lower half of the areola.

How in the most serious cases it is necessary to reduce the size of the areola, the scar is around the areola (this is concealed by the transition from the dark skin of the areola to the lighter skin of the breast).

Generally, the scars become less visible between 4 and 6 months after surgery and women often say it was worth it, despite these marks.

Your plastic surgeon will be able to explain the best techniques to ensure that the scar is as unnoticeable as possible.

Recovery after surgery

Recovery

Usually, the woman discharged the next dayAfter surgery, you can recover in the comfort of your own home.

We recommend using a post-surgical braFor the first few days, it is recommended that you keep your arms free of metal rings for a period of 1 to 2 months, and also that you avoid very large movements with your arms.

It is also advisable to carry out manual lymphatic drainage to speed up recovery, improve comfort and reduce the oedema associated with surgery.

Resumption of activity / routine after surgery

Recovery after surgery to treat tuberous breasts varies greatly from woman to woman and is a very personal matter.

In most cases, after 2 or 3 weeks the woman is fit for any activity, although it is advisable to take a longer break (1 to 2 months) before starting again with more intense physical exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the adverse effects?

The most common adverse effects are transient and disappear spontaneously. The most common are ecchymosis (bruising), oedema ("swelling") and paresthesia ("numbness"). They often disappear within 2 to 3 weeks.

Another unwanted effect is asymmetry, resulting from a difference in the volume or position of the nipple. This difference could be the result of an asymmetry that existed before the surgery (which is very common) and which went unnoticed by the woman, which is why a thorough objective examination before the procedure is essential.

Most techniques preserve the ability to breastfeed, although there is often a transient change in the sensitivity of the nipple.

One unwanted effect is scars. However, the majority of women who wish to undergo this procedure would rather have scars on a breast that is proportional to their body and without deformities, than live with the existing changes, which have a very negative impact on a woman's self-esteem.

Scars become less obvious over time. Your plastic surgeon will be able to advise you on the best way to treat your scars.

Is the surgery safe?

Like any surgery, breast augmentation is not without its risks.

In fact, the first step is to consult a Plastic Surgeon who is registered with the Portuguese Medical Association (www.ordemdosmedicos.pt) and the Portuguese Society of Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (www.spcpre.org.pt).

In addition, you should choose a clinic with a suitable environment for the consultation and surgery.

It is also important to choose the right time to have the surgery, whether socially, personally or professionally.

You should talk openly with your doctor, ask any questions you may have, clarify your objectives and expectations and hear about the possible results, the necessary post-operative care and possible complications.

Are there other ways to treat Tuberous Breast?

Tuberous breasts are treated surgically. There are no other forms of treatment other than surgery.
